Emotional support at our refuge is not just about listening, it’s about transformation. Our trauma-informed team is trained to understand the deep and lasting impact of domestic abuse and we work with survivors to help them feel safe, seen and supported. Our staff have completed the Level 5 Diploma in Trauma and Mental Health with TISUK, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to support both adults and children through complex trauma with care, creativity and clinical insight.
Therapy
We use a range of therapeutic approaches to help individuals process their experiences and begin to heal. This includes the Domestic Abuse Recovery Toolkit, affect labelling, sand tray work, big empathy drawings, and attachment-based play. These methods allow survivors to express themselves safely, often without needing words. Our work is guided by neuroscience, recognising how trauma affects the brain and how positive, relational experiences can help rewire it for healing.
Building for the Future
Crucially, we also help families begin to build new, joyful memories. Thanks to a grant from the Claude Ballard Southall Memorial Charity and generous community donations, we can offer days out, creative activities, and shared experiences that bring light into lives that have been overshadowed by fear. These moments of joy are not just a break from the past- they are the beginning of something new.
Our Partners
We are proud to partner with independent therapists and counsellors through a three-year grant from the PH Holt Foundation. This ensures that women, children, and families can access specialist therapy that complements the emotional support we provide in-house.
