Staying Safe Online
Protecting Your Privacy
If you’re experiencing domestic abuse, your online activity might be monitored by your abuser. Here are some simple steps you can take to cover your tracks and keep yourself safe:
1. Review Privacy Settings
Adjust the privacy options on your social media accounts to restrict who can see your posts and personal information. Consider making your profiles private.
2. Use Safe Devices and Networks
If possible, use a device and internet connection that your abuser doesn’t have access to. Public Wi-Fi or a device at a safe location, like a library, may be safer options.
3. Clear Your History and Cookies
Regularly delete your browsing history, cookies, and saved passwords to prevent someone from tracking your online activity.
4. Turn Off Location Services
Disable location tracking on your phone and apps to stop sharing your whereabouts without your knowledge.
5. Use Incognito or Private Browsing Modes
When researching or browsing sensitive topics, use private or incognito mode to prevent your device from saving your history.
6. Install Security Apps
Consider installing security apps that can help you hide or disguise your activity, or that alert you if someone is trying to track your device.
7. Be Careful with Shared Devices
If you share a device with someone else, always log out of accounts and don’t save passwords.
